The mission didn’t change because the plan fell apart. The plan fell apart so God could provide something better.

Troy Sledge, RN, MSN, tells the story of how he joined a medical outreach team, intent on ministering in a town in Kenya. But, when they arrived, the governmental authority in the town disregarded the permit they’d received in advance and refused to let the team set up a medical clinic.

Unsure what to do, the team spent the night in the town and conferred with each other. Karen Bean, the team leader, instructed them to pray.

The next day, Karen gathered the team together.

“The Lord says to divide the team into three different teams,” she said. “One team for each van. All three vans are to drive off in different directions into the Serengeti, and the Lord will show each van where to go.”

“It was a huge step of faith,” Troy said.

Nonetheless, the teams set off in three directions.

Troy said, “The van I was in drove out into the wilderness and we later found a Maasai village.”

In this village, there were three chiefs, whom the team approached with their translators.

The Maasai believe in one God who gave them their cattle. These three chiefs had been praying that God would send them someone to tell them more about Him.

“And we show up from 12,000 miles away, with no roadmap to get to them.”

The team shared the Gospel with the chiefs and the people, and the entire village received Christ as their savior.

When all three teams met up again in the town, each one had the same results. They’d all come upon a village in the middle of nowhere, shared the Gospel, and many received Christ.

“Only God could have orchestrated those encounters!”
