Stephania with a bottle of the life-changing medicine

With gang violence ruining the country and terrorism gradually taking over, a clinic has slowly been running out of options for medicine and supplies. With numerous patients—from newborns to adults—experiencing a variety of illnesses and disabilities, the clinic continues to grow and serve those in need around them. One freezing morning, a nurse steps into the courtyard to get to the other side of the clinic in quick fashion, as she normally does. She hears a quiet whimpering, a sound common to her, as she’s heard with others in the past, but this time it is much softer and weaker. She looks around and finds a child—a girl—lying on the ground, shivering. She scoops her up and takes her inside immediately. The nurse doesn’t realize it now, but her small act of kindness will be a lifesaver for this little girl.

Her name is Stephania*. She was abandoned by her family at the age of seven and left in the clinic’s courtyard. They run tests on this little girl and find that she cannot speak, walk, or perform any tasks on her own. They also find that she cannot understand her surroundings and needs full-time attention and care, including being fed and bathed. Because of her severe disability, she also suffers from epileptic seizures. So, they put her on a medication that allows her to live well and not suffer the harsh side effects of the seizures.

Ten years have passed since taking in Stephania, who is now seventeen, and her personality shines brighter than ever. Workers in the clinic say that she has a beautiful spirit, and just a simple glance or gentle presence is enough to bring a radiant smile to her face.

However, with the clinic’s location being in such a difficult place to receive medicine, their supply can wane or even run out of essential medications that help patients live stably. Every day without these medicines is a time of harsh withdrawals, aggravated conditions, or even worse. This is the case for Stephania. Without her medicine, her health becomes very fragile. That is why the clinic tries their hardest to keep it well stocked—especially for Stephania. They find Blessings International to provide for some of their critically needed medicines and get them shipped directly to Haiti, including the medicine that Stephania needs.

Now, she is healthier and more stable despite being in such a vulnerable state. Stephania can now thrive because of the generous kindness from the clinic who helped the helpless, and from Blessings International who were there to provide critically needed medicine on time. Many would think that it is just pills, but for Stephania, it is a lifeline.
