Celebrating 11 years at the helm this month, it's no secret that Barry has furthered Blessings' mission to serve. "We have the privilege of sharing Christ’s love, through medicine, with those that are hurting," he says. "When I think back over the past eleven years at Blessings International, I’m proud of our team’s heart and commitment to serving."
Recently, Barry was kind enough to give us some exclusive insight into his role at Blessings, what he is the most proud of during his time so far, as well some things you may have not known about him!
Name: Barry Ewy
When you began working at Blessings: September 2013
Role: CEO
If you had to compare yourself to a book/movie/TV character, who would you be, and why?
"Most people here might try to compare me to Michael Scott on The Office, but that isn’t accurate. I think I’d be more like George Bailey on It’s A Wonderful Life because at times it’s easy to forget all of the blessings we have in life but I’m frequently reminded how wonderful and full of a life I’ve had with the incredible relationships I’ve had over my life and getting to do the amazing jobs I’ve done, especially here at Blessings."
In your own words, describe what you do and the part you play at Blessings:
"As the CEO, I have the privilege of leading the organization. A huge part of that is trying to build up the other leaders in our organization, as well as the responsibility I have for assuring that all regulatory requirements are met and all of the import for export products are available for those we serve."
What’s something about you that would surprise us?
"That I can rap 'Bust a Move' pretty well!"
What is your favorite aspect of your job?
"Getting to come to work in a Christian environment every day and all of the organizational aspects of leading Blessings International."
Where have you served in a missional capacity?
"I’ve served in Dominican Republic, Haiti, Peru, and Nicaragua."
Where/How would you like to serve in the future?
"I’d like to serve somewhere in Africa since that’s not a continent I’ve been to yet. Maybe Zambia or Ethiopia."
What is your best memory here at Blessings?
"There have been so many amazing memories here at Blessings that it’s hard to pick one. All of the people have been incredible from the staff, to the Board Members, to the volunteers, it’s hard to pick a specific memory because I don’t want to highlight any one event over another. But if I had to pick one, I think it would be the whole process of working through the COVID pandemic. While that wasn’t at all fun, it was amazing to get to work with our Board, our Staff, and many different organizations that were still able to serve in the locations where they have permanent facilities. Our Board and Staff did an unbelievable job of making sure we accomplished everything we could and were able to remain viable to make it through to the other side and continue to serve those who are serving others. Not only did we make it through, but because of our desire to be innovative, we have been able to grow and serve in new areas and new ways that we didn’t prior to the pandemic."
